Welcome to Mrs. Kreckman's Fourth Grade Classroom
By Kristin Kreckman
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to our classroom! Below are some of our weekly and monthly goals. We are eager to learn and grow.
Language Arts: This year we will be reading out of our new Reading textbook, Storytown. All of our classroom practice with Spelling Words, new vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, grammar, and writing will match the story of the week. Most of the workbook pages will be completed in class. The goal is to get students reading regularly and making connections.
Daily Geography: The beginning of the year, our class covered map skills. Our Social Studies text will take us on a journey from the past to the present across the United States. Daily Geography is begun in class and taken home to complete. Parent participation is welcome. This weekly exercise leads to discussions of places, people, and experiences. Many of our classmates will be sharing their worldly adventures.
Science: In Science we will cover everything from environments and planets to simple machines. There will be a few creative at-home projects throughout the year.
Math Practice and Application: As partners in education, students and parents will need to review and drill Math facts. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division will need to be mastered. In class, we practice facts using flashcards, dry erase boards, games, worksheets, and Mad Minute sheets that time students on speed.
Spelling: Your child will be bringing home a list of Spelling words for the week. The words go along with the story we are reading in Reading. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday night require a signature from the parents to say that the words were studied. Corresponding pages and practice are also assigned. For instance, a Tic Tac Toe worksheet will be coming home for practice. This sheet will be signed off on. Practice Spelling words on Spelling City.
Reading for Book-It: Our class will be participating in the Pizza Hut Book-It Program beginning October 1st and running through March. To warm things up, I am encouraging students to read daily. Your support at home is appreciated. We are growing "life-long readers." I hope to instill a passion for reading in each and every student. Starting with September, I would like to inspire each student to read 200 or more pages a month. That is 10 pages a night Monday through Friday for 20 days. No matter what your reading level or pleasure, it is an attainable goal. Chapter books and easier books can be tallied and turned in for a reward. If reading a book with pictures, print must cover half the page. September's reward will be teacher directed. October through March will be Pizza Hut certificates redeemable for a personal pan pizza. April and May's reward will be decided at a later date. Select book topics you enjoy and find a place to cozy up and read!!!
