Mrs. Goy - Speech
Speech and language - it's the foundation for nearly everything that happens here at Blackstone! It is how each student appropriately gets their needs met, shares their ideas and feelings, establishes and keeps friendships, asks for help or information, interacts appropriately with friends and adults, understands and enjoys humor, and listens effectively. Most importantly for learning, we realize that language is the basis of all academics- especially reading. Because communicating is so integral to successful learning, Blackstone School is committed to providing its students with many and varied opportunities to exercise and develop these skills. Spend just moments in each classroom and you will observe students being bathed in a language-rich environment by creative and inviting teachers that encourage auditory, speech, and language development in a host of ways.
Students that demonstrate delays in the areas of: articulation, auditory memory, auditory comprehension, auditory reasoning, grammar, vocabulary, language use, language processing, and /or fluency(stuttering) that appear to be impacting their success in the classroom may be served by the speech-language therapist. Should a teacher suspect a delay, students are referred to the therapist and if parents give permission, are tested. If skills are found to be delayed when compared to other children their age, an individual plan is developed and offered to parents for their child to receive. If parents want their child to receive the help outlined in the plan, the child is scheduled to attend speech-language therapy in a group of 1-3 students in order to develop those specific skills identified as being delayed. Students participate in speech-language therapy only as long as they need it and then are dismissed through a conference with parents and teachers. At the present time 54 of our students are being served by our speech-language therapist in either a formal or informal way.
While Blackstone School provides wonderfully trained and uniquely gifted teachers for your child, we recognize that you as parents are your child's first teacher. You have a HUGE impact on your child's auditory, speech, and language development through the experiences you provide and the communication that you model. Should you ever have concerns or questions about your child's communication skills or want specific suggestions, please feel free to contact me by phone here at school (815-539-6888) or through our school e-mail.
Speech and language - it's the foundation of nearly everything that happens here at Blackstone School! We look forward to partnering with you in helping your child to develop those communication skills that will support a positive and successful school experience here and in the the years to come.
