About Mendota 289 Schools

Mendota Community Consolidated School District 289 is located in north-central Illinois within LaSalle, Bureau, and Lee Counties including the communities of Compton, Mendota, Triumph, Troy Grove, and West Brooklyn. The district is organized under the laws of the State of Illinois for the purpose of providing its residents with education services for all eligible children in pre-kindergarten through grade 8. The district operates three buildings, Blackstone School, serving kindergarten and first grade students; Lincoln School, a building with grades two, three, and four; and Northbrook School housing students in fifth grade through grade eight and preschool. The School District 289 administrative office is located at 1806 Guiles Avenue, in the Education Center located at the south side of Northbrook School.

The Schools are governed by a board comprised of seven community members elected to office by the voters of the school district. Members are elected to four year terms with elections held in April of odd years. The School Board is charged with the responsibility of establishing the policies governing the School District. Current School Board members are: Mr. Sean Borchelt(President), Mr. Tim Pohl (Vice President), Mr. Sean Pappas (Secretary), Mrs. Tricia Guelde, Mrs. Sonia D'Arteaga, Mrs. Julie Lee, and Mrs. Mandy Ossman.

All Board meetings are open to the public. Regular monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 P.M. in the District 289 Education Center Board Room. Special Board meetings are called at least 48 hours in advance and notice posted on this web site and in each school. The approximate amount of the operating budget of the district is $ 9,500,000. The district currently employs 180 full and part-time workers and serves approximately 1,300 students.
